A few years ago I stumbled upon a couple of pencil columns 10 feet long and ~ 10 inches in diameter at a local stone yard. I hadn’t seen columns remain intact at this length and I was inspired to see if I could pierce their length or not, so I built a machine to find out. The first one went so rapidly I decided to do another to see if it was beginner’s luck. The 2nd was also a success. Torches resulted. Very Cool. Photo was taken at the Portland Convention Center a few years ago where the columns were on display. Both have custom metal support bases and come with propane supply lines. Both are available for purchase.
